USJ & Bay Area

3 Spots

Osaka's Bay Area is the city's entertainment waterfront, anchored by Universal Studios Japan — one of only four Universal theme parks in the world. Since opening in 2001, USJ has evolved from a movie-themed park into a pop-culture powerhouse, with lands dedicated to Super Nintendo World, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and seasonal events that draw millions of visitors annually.

Beyond USJ, the bay offers Kaiyukan, one of the world's largest aquariums, and the Tempozan Marketplace with its giant Ferris wheel overlooking Osaka Bay. The area is easily accessible from central Osaka and makes a perfect full-day excursion that balances thrills with more relaxed waterfront exploration.

Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan is a world-class theme park that has firmly established itself as western Japan's top entertainment destination. The crown jewel is Super Nintendo World, a fully immersive land where guests wear Power-Up Bands to interact with the environment, ride Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge using AR technology, and explore a life-sized Mushroom Kingdom. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter recreates Hogsmeade village and Hogwarts Castle with stunning attention to detail, including the Flight of the Hippogriff coaster and Butterbeer shops. Seasonal events — particularly the Halloween Horror Nights (Sept-Nov) and spectacular winter illuminations — keep repeat visitors returning year after year.

Kaiyukan Aquarium
Experience

Kaiyukan Aquarium

Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest and most spectacular aquariums, built around a dramatic 9-metre-deep central tank that recreates the Pacific Ocean and houses whale sharks, manta rays, and thousands of other marine species. The visitor path spirals downward around this towering tank over eight floors, offering ever-changing perspectives from surface to deep sea. The journey begins with a walk through a glass tunnel beneath a tropical rainforest canopy, then descends through themed zones representing the Pacific Rim — from the kelp forests of Monterey Bay to the icy waters of Antarctica. The hands-on touch pool at the end lets visitors gently stroke sharks and rays. Evening visits (after 5 PM) offer a quieter, more atmospheric experience with special lighting.

Tempozan Harbor Village
Landmark

Tempozan Harbor Village

Tempozan Harbor Village is a waterfront complex centered around the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel — at 112.5 metres, one of the tallest in the world. A single rotation takes 15 minutes and offers sweeping views over Osaka Bay, the city skyline, and on clear days, all the way to Mt. Ikoma and Awaji Island. Transparent-floor gondolas are available for the brave. The adjacent Tempozan Marketplace houses shops, restaurants, and a food court replicating a nostalgic 1960s Osaka streetscape. Nearby, the tiny Tempozan Park surrounds what was once Japan's lowest mountain (4.53 metres) — climbing it takes seconds, but you can collect an official "summit" certificate. It's an amusingly humble counterpoint to the gleaming attractions around it.
